Privacy-first document scanner · Free for Android

Your documents stay on your phone.

Most scanner apps upload your pages to their cloud. DScan doesn't. Every scan is made on your phone, nothing is uploaded, and nothing is stored on our server. Crop the page, blur out anything private, and send it from Gmail or WhatsApp. Once it's sent, it's erased from the app.

Private by design

Privacy-first, not privacy-later

DScan was built so that it can't see your documents. The camera, the cropping, the blur and the PDF all happen on your phone. Our server only sends the app to your browser. It has no upload, no database and no copy of anything you scan.

  • Nothing on our serverPages go straight from your camera to the app you send them with. We never receive them, so there is nothing of yours to leak, sell or hand over.
  • Erased once sentUnsent scans wait on your phone in case Android closes the app. The moment you send them, they are gone.
  • Blur that can't be undoneThe blur is burned into the image. The hidden text is not under it any more, so nobody can lift it off.
  • Only a countWe count how often the app is opened and how many pages are sent, never what is on them. Read the privacy page.
How it works

From paper to someone's inbox in a minute

1

Scan

Take a photo. DScan finds the page edges and straightens a page shot at an angle. It warns you if the photo is blurry or has glare, before you start editing. Scan up to 5 documents, each one a multi-page PDF or a single JPG.

2

Blur and tidy

Rub your finger over anything private. Then pick colour, grey or black and white, which also makes the file much smaller. Set a page size from 100 KB to 2 MB and every page fits under it.

3

Send

Tap Send and pick Gmail, WhatsApp, Drive or any app that takes files. The documents arrive as real attachments, and Gmail opens with the subject already filled in.

Install

No Play Store needed

  1. Open dscan.stellar-clouds.com in Chrome on your Android phone.
  2. Tap Open DScan, then Add to home screen at the top of the app.
  3. DScan gets its own icon, opens full screen and works without a network.

Using Samsung Internet? DScan hands you over to Chrome to install, because newer Android versions block home-screen apps made by Samsung's browser.

Questions

Good to know

Does DScan upload or store my documents?

No. Scans are made and kept on your phone, and leave it only when you send them from the app you pick. Our server never receives a scan and stores nothing about what you scan. Unsent scans wait on your phone, and they are erased from DScan the moment you send them.

How can I check that nothing is uploaded?

DScan works with your phone in flight mode. Open it once, switch off the network, and you can still scan, blur and make PDFs. Only the final send needs a connection, and that goes through the app you choose.

Is DScan really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no ads and no paid plan. DScan is made by StellarClouds, and because the work happens on your phone it costs us almost nothing to run.

Can someone remove the blur?

No. The blur changes the pixels themselves before the file is made. It is not a layer on top, so there is nothing underneath to recover.

Why does it ask me to pick an app each time I send?

A web app can't send straight to Gmail; Android always shows its share menu. It does move the apps you use most to the front, so after a couple of sends Gmail is right under your thumb.

A portal says my file is too big. What do I do?

Set a smaller page size in the send bar, anywhere from 100 KB to 2 MB, and DScan shrinks every page to fit. Grey or black and white cuts the size the most.

Does it work on iPhone or a computer?

DScan is built and tested for Chrome on Android. It may open elsewhere, but sending files as attachments depends on Android's share menu.
